ASIA CONFERENCE DAY #1

what a privilege it is to hear from the mighty men of God.

David Yonggi Cho is the founder/senior pastor-emeritus of Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea. YFGC is the world’s largest Protestant church. In 1958, he started the first worship service with Ja-shil Choi, who later became his mother-in-law. Today, YFGC has an attendance of more than 800,000 members.

In 1973, Cho founded the Osanri Choi Ja-sil Memorial Fasting Prayer Mountain to provide a secluded place of prayer, which receives more than a million visitors every year, including some 50,000 foreigners. With the growth of YFGC, Cho also founded Church Growth International in 1976. To help reform the society with the gospel and the love of Jesus, YFGC set up social welfare facilities, such as, Elim Welfare Town and Good People World Family.

Under Cho, the church owns a Christian television network and publishes their own newspapers, Kukmin Daily and Full Gospel Family Newspaper. The importance of education has also prompted the church to set up a 10-story World Evangelical Center (theology) and the renowned Hansei University (education).

I would rather...

"I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

i can swim! PROPERLY!

You Are the Doggie Paddle
You are easygoing and very casual. You don't like to work too hard.

You tend to do things your own way, and that usually goes pretty well of you.

You've been accused of being lazy at times, but people don't realize how successful you actually are.

You just refuse to measure yourself by the world's standards. You're happy being quirky.

Where's the Fat?

Where's the Fat?
Fat, or adipose tissue, is found in several places in your body. Generally, fat is found underneath your skin (subcutaneous fat). There's also some on top of each of your kidneys. Other locations depend upon whether you are a man or woman:

*An adult man tends to carry body fat in his chest, abdomen and buttocks, producing an "apple" shape.

*An adult woman tends to carry fat in her breasts, hips, waist and buttocks, creating a "pear" shape.

*The difference in fat location comes from the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone.

Your body contains two types of fat tissue:

White fat - important in energy metabolism, heat insulation and mechanical cushioning.
Brown fat - found mostly in newborn babies, between the shoulders; important for thermogenesis (making heat).

Fat tissue is made up of fat cells. Fat cells are a unique type of cell. You can think of a fat cell as a tiny plastic bag that holds a drop of fat:

White fat cells are large cells that have very little cytoplasm, only 15 percent cell volume, a small nucleus and one large fat droplet that makes up 85 percent of cell volume.

Brown fat cells are somewhat smaller, are loaded with mitochondria and are composed of several smaller fat droplets. The mitochondria are able to generate heat. Fat cells are formed in the developing fetus during the third trimester of pregnancy, and later at the onset of puberty, when the sex hormones "kick in." It is during puberty that the differences in fat distribution between men and women begin to take form. One amazing fact is that fat cells do not multiply after puberty -- as your body stores more fat, the number of fat cells remains the same. Each fat cell simply gets bigger! In addition to fat tissue, some fat is stored in the liver, and an even smaller amount in muscle.

How fat enters your body
When you eat food that contains fat, mostly triglycerides, it goes through your stomach and intestines. In the intestines, the following happens:

1. Large fat droplets get mixed with bile salts from the gall bladder in a process called emulsification. The mixture breaks up the large droplets into several smaller droplets called micelles, increasing the fat's surface area.

2. The pancreas secretes enzymes called lipases that attack the surface of each micelle and break the fats down into their parts, glycerol and fatty acids.

3.These parts get absorbed into the cells lining the intestine.

4. In the intestinal cell, the parts are reassembled into packages of fat molecules (triglycerides) with a protein coating called chylomicrons. The protein coating makes the fat dissolve more easily in water.

5. The chylomicrons are released into the lymphatic system -- they do not go directly into the bloodstream because they are too big to pass through the wall of the capillary.

6. The lymphatic system eventually merges with the veins, at which point the chylomicrons pass into the bloodstream.

You might be wondering why fat molecules get broken down into glycerol and fatty acids if they're just going to be rebuilt. This is because fat molecules are too big to easily cross cell membranes. So when passing from the intestine through the intestinal cells into the lymph, or when crossing any cell barrier, the fats must be broken down. But, when fats are being transported in the lymph or blood, it is better to have a few, large fat molecules than many smaller fatty acids, because the larger fats do not "attract" as many excess water molecules by osmosis as many smaller molecules would.

How fat is stored in your body
Chylomicrons do not last long in the bloodstream -- only about eight minutes -- because enzymes called lipoprotein lipases break the fats into fatty acids. Lipoprotein lipases are found in the walls of blood vessels in fat tissue, muscle tissue and heart muscle. The activity of lipoprotein lipases depends upon the levels of insulin in the body. If insulin is high, then the lipases are highly active; if insulin is low, the lipases are inactive.

The fatty acids are then absorbed from the blood into fat cells, muscle cells and liver cells. In these cells, under stimulation by insulin, fatty acids are made into fat molecules and stored as fat droplets.

It is also possible for fat cells to take up glucose and amino acids, which have been absorbed into the bloodstream after a meal, and convert those into fat molecules. The conversion of carbohydrates or protein into fat is 10 times less efficient than simply storing fat in a fat cell, but the body can do it. If you have 100 extra calories in fat (about 11 grams) floating in your bloodstream, fat cells can store it using only 2.5 calories of energy. On the other hand, if you have 100 extra calories in glucose (about 25 grams) floating in your bloodstream, it takes 23 calories of energy to convert the glucose into fat and then store it. Given a choice, a fat cell will grab the fat and store it rather than the carbohydrates because fat is so much easier to store.

It is important to note that as your body stores more fat, the number of fat cells remains the same; each fat cell simply gets bigger.

Hormones That Act Opposite to Insulin
When you are not eating, your body is not absorbing food. If your body is not absorbing food, there is little insulin in the blood. However, your body is always using energy; and if you're not absorbing food, this energy must come from internal stores of complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Under these conditions, various organs in your body secrete hormones:

pancreas - glucagon
pituitary gland - growth hormone
pituitary gland - ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone)
adrenal gland - epinephrine (adrenaline)
thyroid gland - thyroid hormone

These hormones act on cells of the liver, muscle and fat tissue, and have the opposite effects of insulin.

How your body breaks down fat
When you are not eating, or you are exercising, your body must draw on its internal energy stores of complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Your body's prime source of energy is glucose. In fact, some cells in your body, such as brain cells, can get energy only from glucose.

The first line of defense in maintaining energy is to break down carbohydrates, or glycogen, into simple glucose molecules -- this process is called glycogenolysis. Next, your body breaks down fats into glycerol and fatty acids in the process of lipolysis. The fatty acids can then be broken down directly to get energy, or can be used to make glucose through a multi-step process called gluconeogenesis. In gluconeogenesis, amino acids can also be used to make glucose.

In the fat cell, other types of lipases work to break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These lipases are activated by various hormones, such as glucagon, epinephrine and growth hormone. The resulting glycerol and fatty acids are released into the blood, and travel to the liver through the bloodstream. Once in the liver, the glycerol and fatty acids can be either further broken down or used to make glucose.

anyhw, we finally made it to our long planned for dinner. at sun with moon!

received cookies from ah meow too! well it's cookies in the shape of melody! so cute!
ordered food + desserts (= LOVE!) their tofu cheesecake is their signature dessert, but i appeared to be more fascinated by the choc crepe, and erm perhaps the presentation of the tofu cheesecake in the birdcage. exquisite with a capital E.
overall, we had great laughs over guessing people's ages, stalking blogs, and catching up with one another.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
' With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

dinner with the windsurfers

organising dinner with the windsurfers has never been easy. we have had pharmacist, bankers, teachers, engineers, accountants, civil servants in our midst, and booking their time is a near impossible task!

but surprisingly, quite a no of us in fact turned up for wat i call a very impromptu dinner! hahah... last minute is the new advanced booking!
had good la mian and XLB, and great snow ice (albeit the fact that one of them happened to be durian, zzz)
but really, the HIGHLIGHT of the night has to be ladybird cayenne! she's soooo cute! dan and alex are happily learning how to be papa!

catch'em!

Step 1: Purchase a packet of "CATCH'EM" from the supermarket! Price range from $3+ to $10; difference in price due to the quality of the food i supposed?
Step 2: Open up 1 (or 2, if required) CATCH'EM and place them in very strategic places in the car.

Step 3: Wait 2-3 days, depending on the hunger level of qiang qiang... and viola~! I caught ONE qiang qiang!
Step 4 (optional): Leave qiang qiang there and wait for it to starve to death.. *wahahah*

disclaimer: at this moment in time, pls do not look at perper with judgement, EVERY car has their own qiang qiang, it's a matter of whether u see them or not. hehe.

let's see how far i'll go...

I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,
But its feeling just like every morning before,
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if its gone,
The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour if that
I started staring at the passengers waving goodbye
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time...

tuition, or loan sharks?

my tuition days are getting more and more exciting. juz the other day, my kid had 猪头plastered all over her sis' room! (never owe a woman money!)

helix. double helix. helix. double helix.

visited the Helix Bridge (and the surroundings) for the FIRST time yesterday! it was formerly known as the double helix bridge... so wat difference does it make if it were Helix or DOUBLE Helix? *frowns* muz be some fengshui theory... ... ...glittering gold welcome!alright let's talk abt the bridge... first of all, i have to admit that truly it was a fine piece of art, albeit the fact that practicality me starts to ponder where one runs to hide from the sun and the occasional sudden rain in singapore.

people were furiously taking photos, so i also dun su say! i whipped out my DSLR (it's called the apple iphone) to join in the fun! oh well, and hence explaining the quality of the pics. =(

so here you go! the (very young) artist's impression of the bridge...
and the bridge at its finest. =)
btw, does anyone happen to know those bright red and green lights on the ground that read "C", "G", "A" and "T"? update me if u do!
ok i am not doing any justice to the magnificent piece of art.. there's somewhere with nicer pics though, check it out here for more real solid pics!

the very-talked-about big bowl at MBS that keeps alot of water (read: wealth) and that the water will flow into the building.on second thought, i tink it will flow into here... the wealth i meant. i tink it's ALL abt fengshui over here yea...
and the very big 香奈儿dat's not yet open. i am more enthusiastic abt the LV though. hahah.
and more art... we are an artistic nation...

**********

oh and did i mention we checked out the hotel rooms... it appeared that the bathtubs are OPEN CONCEPT and overlooking the city. cool!well, for the rest of the unopened areas. will update if i ever will step foot there again... like they said.. NOT LONG UNTIL. =)

of buses and trainssss....

have you been to the newest circle lines mrt? i must say that these circle lines are indeed strategically placed everywhere! of all the mrts, i tink i love this circle line the most!

the other day, i took the mrt from the bras basah station. first of all, it looked like some bomb shelter. the walls are grey and dull. perhaps it was indeed a bomb shelter doubling up as an mrt station, not the other way round. and then, the platforms are situated way way way down! it's B5 for crying out loud!
oh and before u even reached the platform, pls overcome your fear of long escalators. and if long escalators aint scary enough to scare you, try going down a looong escalator with 3 HUGE, BLACK PIPES going over u! arrrrgh...
even the elevator shaft morphs through a wall of not-sure-wat to get you from one level to the other. =S
and the seats (if you have not already realised that they are seats) are meant for ppl with tiny butts.
oh, and pls DO NOT even try to play driver and look into the tunnels. u neva know wat u might see. *raises eyebrows*
indeed, tis aint for the faint hearted.... ...

enough is enough

well, it's not usually me to be emo, crying out for attention, having yoyo emotions, etc. after all, these are the very stuffs which i totally detest. but i have to admit that the past week was bad. =( let's juz say that i've opened my eyes to the condition of the human heart. After all, “ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"

but i've learned something over the past week.

GIVE ADVICE; IF THEY REFUSE TO HEAR, LET ADVERSITY TEACH THEM.

well i wont say that i am back with a vengeance, all charged up and ready to go. instead, i shall adopt and sit and observe kinda mentality. let's juz see how far i can go.

**********

on a side note, it's usually times like tis you can tell which your real frens are. are u a true friend? =\

贱招!

贱招 #1!

the other day we turned right into this road looking for a petrol kiosk... it was a loooooong road, and so we did a ''not-so legal'' u-turn. ha. the kiosk was EMPTY, the uncle muz be glad that they have customers! after that, we went back on track to get to where we came from.

and den we were stopped. by the police. he asked "where u all come from ah? u all made a u-turn behind or further down?"

"erm we made a u-turn?"

"cannot be, cos we closed the other side of the road already. so u all made an ILLEGAL u-turn.."

"... ... ..."

thank God he wasnt out to catch illegal u-turners! now we know why the whole stretch of road was EMPTY.

**********

which led me to recall wat happened long ago in school... 贱招 #2!

remember the Assembly period? the school was kind/lazy enough to let us off during Assembly period to do what they call "self reading". well since lunch time followed, some smart alecks tot that it was ok to go out of the school campus for an early long lunch!!!!

some 10 min into the period.... the FIRE ALARM rang. and the school gate was CLOSED.

attendance HAD to be taken.

and SO, those who sneaked outta school was caught. haha. (i was NOT one of them!)

MORAL of the story: Beware of 贱招s everywhere!

roxie rox chicago!

the Chicago musical indeed rox! well, it's me and weiwei trying to take pics of ourselves inconspicuously. but we ended up making a big hoohar over her erm, short arms. (thus explaining y we filled up the whole pic with our faces. zzz)
and tis is how high i was at.. no wonder one can fall to his death in the esplanade theatre. ||-.-
some pics i secretly took with my appy phoney. not too bad considering we were almost touching the ceiling. well we need to get better seats in future, earlier too.
well in conclusion, it's a show that's definitely worth the money. *winks*

idiom of the week

If there's one phrase to learn tis week, it would be this.

对牛弹琴 duì niú tán qín
· to play the lute to a cow (idiom); fig. offering a treat to a unappreciative audience
· to cast pearls before swine
· to preach to deaf ears

well, i guess i've been getting a lot of this lately. enough is enough.

lesson learnt: if you want to behave like a cow, i wont bother to treat u humanely.

"kar kar"

arrr! i picked sis up from the airport.. and guess wat? an uninvited guest followed me home! first to supper den back home! argh!

i've decided to adopt it. it's called "kar kar". can u spot it? hehe.

My Daily Bread...
